Simple haircut techniques to thin hair by myself? Maintain hair length, but reduce volume on sides?

I'm trying to save some money by cutting my own hair, but I'm trying to do as little as possible so the consequence won't be huge if I mess up. I have heavier hair volume on the left and right sides of my head (take a look at Leonardo Dicaprio's hair if you need a mental picture) and I'd like to reduce it. I know just cutting the hair short won't do the trick, so I guess I need a way to thin it. Hopefully there's a way that's not too difficult. Appreciate your help.
